Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti National Park covers 14,763 km2 of vast open plains that stretch across the Tanzanian area between the Kenyan border and the outskirts of Lake Victoria. It has an abundance of wildlife, with numbers estimated at well over 3 million. There is even an active volcano within the park — an interesting place to visit. The Serengeti ranges from 920m to 1,850m in altitude and is not as flat as many travellers believe; amongst these different altitude levels you'll discover remarkable animals hidden in valleys or on top of beautiful rock formations.

One of the most popular times to visit Tanzania, especially the Serengeti, is when the famous wildebeest migration takes place. The annual wildebeest migration usually crosses into the Serengeti between May and early June, as millions of wildebeest cross Tanzania searching for water and food as the season changes — a magical sight and a major draw for travellers who visit during this period.

This national park is also known for its amazing history, which includes the Maasai — fierce warriors who lived beside and with these majestic animals in East Africa. The name "Serengeti" is actually from the Maasai language, Maa — specifically "Serengit", meaning "Endless Plains".

In addition to wildebeest, the Serengeti holds many types of large antelope, including zebra, impala, eland, klipspringer, dik-dik and several kinds of buck. Also look out for lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, rhinos, elephants, hippos, hyenas, bat-eared foxes, jackals, warthogs, porcupines, crocodiles, baboons, mongooses and different types of monkey. The Serengeti is also home to almost 500 different bird species, including vultures, storks, flamingos, martial and fish eagles and ostriches.

The Serengeti National Park is a must for any Tanzania safari — the opportunity to see the wildebeest migration and spend time in the beauty of this national park surrounded by nature and animals is the perfect Tanzania safari option.
