Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, with three volcanic cones — Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. The highest mountain in Africa and the world's highest free-standing volcano, it comprises two dormant volcanoes (Kibo, 5,895m, and Mawenzi, 5,149m) and one extinct volcano (Shira, 3,962m). The name is thought to combine the Swahili word "Kilima" (mountain) and the Chagga word "Njaro" (loosely, "whiteness"), giving "White Mountain".

Kilimanjaro's 1,712 km² was declared a National Park in 1973, officially opened for tourism in 1977, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and named a Natural Wonder of Africa in 2013. Climbing to its summit is a lifetime experience no one forgets.
