At a height of 4,566 metres, Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano set in Arusha National Park, 70km west of Kilimanjaro. Generally the Mount Meru climb takes four days, though it can be done in three for those pressed for time. It is visible from Kilimanjaro on a clear day and is the fifth-highest mountain in Africa. Climbing Mount Meru, the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, is enjoyable, with far less traffic than Kilimanjaro and superb wildlife encounters as you hike past game on the lower slopes.
